History: The team name for Northwestern was originally "the Fighting Methodists" but was changed to the Wildcats in 1924. The student body voted to change the name to "Purple Haze" in 1972, but the name never stuck. The current team mascot is Willie the Wildcat, but the very first mascot was a Bear Cub borrowed from Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. Famous alumni include football legend Otto Graham and legendary broadcaster Brent Musberger.
