The WHA intended to have hockey teams in San Francisco and Los Angeles, but before the season started the San Francisco team headed to Quebec leaving the Los Angeles Sharks the sole California team. Despite having a strong first season things fell apart in the 2nd season putting them in last place and leading to a move to Michigan.
